Disaster victims aboard Tortuga are given food, water and a place to sleep before being transported to an evacuation center. The ship is currently moored at Naval Support Activity New Orleans in support of Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations. The Navys involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
