040921-N-5152S-005 Naval Outlying Landing Field, San Nicolas Island (Sept. 21, 2004) Ð Construction continues on the worlds first open-ocean, roll-on roll-off pier, located on the Navy-owned San Nicolas Island, about 70 miles off the California coast. The $12 million construction project on Naval Outlying Landing Field San Nicolas Island will enable the Navy to safely offload equipment and supplies for use by the islands Navy and civilian population. Barges will be able to pull up to a horizontal, mechanical ramp that will lower from deck elevation to water level for roll-on roll-off cargo transfer.
