Photo Description:
040721-N-1485H-022Pacific Ocean (July 21, 2004) - Interior Communications Technician Fireman Manuel Garciacasanova of North Plainfield, N.J., repairs a sound-powered telephone aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). Sound-powered telephones are utilized aboard all Navy ships as an alternate means of communication to the electrical telephone or two-way radio. Powered by the energy generated from the user's voice, sound-powered telephones are commonly used by watch standers, lookouts, and in the event of power loss. They have been in service since before WWII. Interior communications technicians are responsible of all shipboard interior communications systems aboard Navy ships. Kitty Hawk is one of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs) involved in Summer Pulse 2004. Summer Pulse 2004 is the simultaneous deployment of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs), demonstrating the ability of the Navy to provide credible combat capability across the globe, in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces. Summer Pulse is the Navy's first deployment under its new Fleet Response Plan (FRP). Currently underway in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), Kitty Hawk demonstrates power projection and sea control, as the world's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, based in Yokosuka, Japan.
